Bumper cracks & repair

So it's time to work on my bumpers.
Rear is imola yellow and in good condition with a paint chip
Front is silver but cracked and heaps of scratches/marks all over it. While I'm in there, I may as well do the "RS4" fogrille mod & shave the headlight washer caps.

Just looking for tips on those that have worked with cracks and what they've used to repair 'em?

I'm aiming to give the repairs a shot then hand them over to one of my mates at his body shop for paint & paint matching. If I do feel confident, I'll log it here and hopefully it serves as a general purpose DIY.
Will post pics on the weekend.

Re: Bumper cracks & repair

I'm not aware of any way to really repair cracks... I had a single stone chip on my bonnet prior to getting the Ventureshield put on, and it's definitely still visible if you know where to look.

I'd probably say you'll need to sand back and shoot a coat of filler primer on, then sand some more..

Re: Bumper cracks & repair

Yup, that's the plan. Just not sure what product to use. There's heaps of brands and products out there and the prices vary quite a bit. Not something I want to cheap out on. I'll post pics of the crack soon but it's part of the grill so probably not structurally major.

So far been sanding the front bumper back with 400grit. I've been advised that I should use 320, but taking it a bit cautious as it's my first real go at it.
The rear bumper is really hard to get 400 grit to grip and going, might rough it up with 120 slightly then hit it again and see what happens.

Also debating whether I should remove the middle bar like this:

Looks good Bryan. Two Thumbs up from me !

At least you've got way more room for a big FMIC than me.

Hehe yea. I just hope my used evo core is good and not leaking or anything. Would be gutted if so.

Tiny update log

Full bar:

Deep scratches which need to be filled at the bottom. Pretty much what you'd expect on used & old bar.

Closeup of the crack:

Will need to pop out the rivets and plastic weld tabs holding in the centre grill to get onto the crack.

Until more sandpaper, this is it for now ;)

rear calipers sitting underneath. Probably came off some car in the rust belt. Can't complain for the price. Probably give it run with a wire brush and slap them on.

Some kittyhair on the back to reinforce, then some Rage Gold will fix that up nicely..

Bumper cracks & repair

On another note, could you post pics of your bumper reinforcement after it is trimmed?

By the looks of it, there's gonna be a lotttttt of meat removed from my bumper's reinforcement to get the 23.6' x 8 x 3 inch core fitted.

Re: Bumper cracks & repair

I think my core is 3" too. Def will take pics but it'll be a while before I get round to that stage I think. Have to get somebody else to weld on plates to the core for mounting points plus piping. So I can't even test fit it till that's done.

The S4 bumper shocks are longer. The rebars are interchangeable. So I guess the shocks hold the rebar further out. Will differ bumper to bumper. There are some S4 folk that fit CX racing fmics (not sure of dimensions) if you want to have a look at how much they have to cut?

Yeah Ash's. Had a fun drive on the M2. Kind of pissed at the condition. It was honestly worse than I expected (deep scratches on the top/sides etc, very deep scratches on the bottom right). The crack was better than I expected, so I just went through with it. I was just going to fit it on without repair but I decided to repair it and have my mate respray it. I'll see what I'll do with the other one enroute.
