Replacing rotors on an 2006 A4 1.8T.

Hey guys,

Replaced my rotors and pads today, thought i'd put up a bit of a guide just incase anyone else wants to do the same (could have used one myself!)

OK, so first up you need the right tools!

21mm socket set
7mm allen key
WD40
Lump hammer (which no job is easy to complete without!)
G-Clamp
Star shaped screwdriver bit (cannot recall the size, Sorry!)
Plyers
Block of wood (not necessary but handy)

First, remove the securing wire at the front of the caliper using the plyers

Then remove the two plugs to the rear of the caliper concealing the bolts holding the large part of the caliper.

Remove the two bolts behind the plugs using the 7mm Allen key.

You should then be able to remove the part of the caliper holding the brake pads

Using the 21mm socket, remove the remaining two bolts holding the second part of the caliper.

Using the star shaped screwdriver, remove the single bolt holding the rotor to the wheel hub and spray the centre with WD40

Then tap the old rotor with the hammer until it comes loose ( i used a piece of wood between the rotor and the hammer so as not to dent it incase i had the wrong pads)

Replace with new rotor and reinstall the second part of the caliper removed to hold the rotor in place.

Unscrew the brake fluid cap under the bonnet then using the G-clamp, compress the brake piston back into the caliper housing ( i used the old pad between the G-clamp and piston so as not to damage it )

Disconnect the pad wear sensor, then remove it by turning it 90 degrees to release the part of the sensor attached to the old pad.

Replace with new pads, plug in the new wear sensor and reassemble the first part of the caliper

I would've taken pics when I swapped mine, but my hands were black and too busy holding things :)

All you need now are some wheels with thinner spokes so you can show off your slotted rotors.. ;)

Btw, Just a tip when removing the brake disc from the hub.

I would use a rubber mallet and whack it from the back side. Before you do this, put back one wheel bolt/nut. This prevents the disc flying off after being whacked.

This is one of the methods I use most of the time at work whenever I reuse the brake disc.
